AN UNADORNED CORNICE, RECTANGULAR AND SEGMENTAL ARCH OPENINGS, HOOD MOLDS, PROMINENT LINTLES AND SILLS, AND THREE ENTRANCES (ONE A CORNER ENTRANCE) CHARACTERIZE THIS COMMERCIAL BLOCK. THE STRUCTURE, WHICH IS NOW HOME TO A TAVERN, IS SITUATED ON A CORNER LOT. "W. WELSH" AND "1900" APPEAR ON A PARTIAL PARAPET. (SEE BIB. REF. A). THIS BUILDING IS CONSIDERED TO BE IN GOOD CONDITION.

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND:

A PROMINENT COMMERCIAL STRUCTURE, THE WELSH BLOCK, WAS CONSTRUCTED BY WILLIAM J. WELSH FOLLOWING THE FIRE OF 1900 WHICH DESTROYED THE STRUCTURES (MOST OF THEM BRICK) FROM THIS POINT NORTH APPROXIMATELY ONE-HALF BLOCK. (SEE BIB. REF. D). (SEE PHOTOGRAPHS IN OLD POTOSI. (C)).

IN 1912, THE CORNER BUILDING HOUSED A SALOON, A MILLINERY AND A CONFECTIONERY. (SEE BIB. REF. B).
