Additional Information: | E.P. Scriber and Son, a prominent dry goods store, was established in New Richmond in 1866 and occupied a non-extant storefront along what is now South Knowles Avenue. E.P. Scriber died in 1896, and his son took over the business, which was destroyed by the tornado in 1899. The Commercial Vernacular style Scribner Block building was rebuilt the following year at 155 South Knowles Avenue and has served as a variety of retail uses since. This 1 story commercial building has brick exterior fabric and flat roof. There is a metal entablature with brackets and urns. This has a floral pattern on the ends and a leaf pattern on brackets. Corbel brick work is below this. There is a rear addition and plate glass windows. SC 24-35 and 36 are similar in style. Although alterations have diminished the integrity of this building and it has no architectural significance. It is a good store front example for this city. In 1887 this was the site of 3 stores. All had frame structure, slate roof and one story. The northern most store was a restaurant and confectioneers, the middle a milliner and the south building housed another confectioneer's. In 1892 they held respectively, a harness shop, tailor and confectioneers. After the 1899 tornado destroyed them, the site was rebuilt with 2 stores and known as the Scribner block. They were brick, 1 story with slate roof. The north part housed a confectioneers and wall paper shop, the south a jewelry shop. In 1912 it was a saloon and milliner's and paint shop. The roof was composite. In 1973 Coast-to-Coast Hardware and Waynes Electric were here. |
