Additional Information: | This 2 story commercial building fronts on both East Second Street and on South Knowles. On East Second Street the exterior fabric is aluminum siding and brick with a pent roof between floors. The cornice/parapet has lare endbrackets, smaller metal brackets in between and swags on the frieze. South Knowles facade is also 2 12/2 stories with metal shingles. There is no cornice. The entry is stepped back and there is plate glass on the 1st story. Alterations have detracted from the integrity of this building to the extent that is has no architectural signficance. At one point there were windows and corbel brickwork, neither of which are here now. See SC 24016 for 2nd view. In 1887 this was the site of a shop that sold agricultural Implements. It was a 1 story frame building with shingled roof. The building was vacant in 1892. The building wasd destroyed in the tornado of 1899. Rebuilt in its present form facing both East Second Street and South Knowles. It was 2 1/2 stories with brick strucure and slate roof. It housed a grocer (on S. Knowles) and tailor (on E. Secon d Street). Lodge rooms were on the second story. In 1912 it was a grocers (on S. Knowles), buggies and implement shop (on E. 2nd) & "MWA Hall" on the Second tory. By 1927 the 1st story was no longer divided and the 2nd was still a hall. The roof was composite. There is no historical significance in this building. Its development is similar to other main street commercial buildings. |
