Additional Information: | THIS LONG, ONE-STORY AUTO SHOWROOM FEATURES IN ITS DESIGN STONE GEOMETRIC PATTERNS AND A STONE-CAPPED PARAPET. MUCH OF THE ORIGINAL FIRST FLOOR OPENINGS HAVE BEEN EITHER COVERED WITH BOARDS, OR OTHERWISE ALTERED. THE C. 1927 BUILDING IS CONSIDERED TO BE IN GOOD CONDITION. (SEE BIB. REF. A). CARS WERE DISPLAYED AND SOLD IN THIS SHOWROOM FROM 1927 TO AT LEAST 1933. (SEE BIB. REF. A). HISTORICAL BACKGROUND: THE DODGEVILLE MOTOR CAR COMPANY WAS ORGANIZED BY J. H. FORD, OWNER OF THE FORD HARDWARE STORE (326 N. IOWA STREET, 50/15) IN 1908. IN 1914, HE TURNED OVER THE MANAGEMENT OF THE AUTOMOBILE OPERATION TO FRANK C. BERRYMAN, A CLERK IN HIS IOWA STREET STORE. AFTER OPENING IN A SMALL FRAME BUILDING, THE COMPANY WAS, IN 1927, RELOCATED IN THIS LARGE BRICK STRUCTURE WHICH ACCOMMODATED THE SALES AND SERVICE OF STUDEBAKERS, HUDSONS, DODGES, PLYMOUTHS, NASHES, AND OLDSMOBILES. (SEE BIB. REF. A). |
