Additional Information: | A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, Division of Historic Preservation. 2014: The c.1870 Francis Good House is a two-story, brick gable ell residence with a stone foundation, combination rear hip roof, and Queen Anne details. The upright, front gable portion features a projecting two-story square bay with pyramidal roof, paired one-over-one windows, and decorative shingles and windows surrounds. An open hip roof porch supported by turned wood posts spans the ell beneath a gable wall dormer with a pair of one-over-one windows. Part of the porch was enclosed to form a gable entry at the center of the facade. The front gable ends are adorned with decorative stickwork. Based on the gable ell form and estimated date of construction, the Queen Anne details are not original, which includes the two-story bay window and decorative accents. They were likely added in the late nineteenth century. The property also includes outbuildings. Adjacent to the house is a c.1900 tobacco barn (AHI No. 229798) with vertical wood board siding, portions of which have been removed. A larger c.1880 gable basement barn (AHI No. 229799) with replacement metal siding and windows is located to the east. Between the two barns is a modern garage. Francis Good was one of the early settlers in this area and purchased the parcel on which the house sits in 1868. Good practiced diversified farming, raised livestock, farmed tobacco, and harvested fruit trees. After his death in 1924, his son George continued to farm the property, although all extant historic-age buildings date to Francis’s lifetime. 2022: No visible changes. |
