| Additional Information: | A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, Division of Historic Preservation-Public History. This Collegiate Gothic Revival style school building rises from a concrete foundation and its reinforced concrete and tile walls are sheathed with red brick. A central, tower like entrance is situated along the structure's primary (south) facade and is heavily detailed with White Bedford stone trim. A Gothic arched, stone surround encompasses a pair of modern steel doors and an infilled transom. Three stone panels above the doorway spell out Berlin High School; the area of above which includes three tall and narrow windows that have been infilled with modern material. The tower is topped with modest stone battlements and a shaped parapet. The remaining south facade is largely symmetrical and includes two bays to either side of the towered entry. Each of the four bays includes a bank of five windows with transoms along each of the three levels; however, all window groupings are fitted with modern, down sized windows and surrounding infill. A stone water table is located above the basement level, as well as above the second floor fenestration. Although not symmetrically placed, both the west and east facades feature similar window groupings and entrances. A 1955, two story addition extends from the rear of the main block. Constructed of brick, this wing is punctuated with regular window openings and lacks any distinctive characteristics. This structure was the third high school building to be erected on this site. The first school was constructed in 1868-69, while the second building was erected in 1901. In 1916, the School Board found it necessary to expand the community's educational facilities. Main hallways were made of terrazzo, maple flooring covered the classroom floors and oak woodwork was found throughout. The school building is currently [2002] used as the middle school. |
