| Additional Information: | This house, which is basically square in plan, is capped by a hipped roof which is intersected by the central gables of the facades. The corner eaves extend into but not across the gables and are supported by incised and scroll-sawn brackets. This two-story house is clad with clapboard accented with a semi-circular, double arched window over the portico. The portico itself reflects the roofline of the house. It is supported by chamfered posts and decorated with characteristic mouldings, incised work and applique. The portico steps and railings are modern as are louvered blinds flanking most windows. The lower story window detailing appears to be a later addition as does the rear entry/enclosed porch. Here, the glazing-particularly of the upper sash--is of small, squarish lights. This is a characteristic of the Craftsman period of 1910 to 1920. This building, despite the recent modification to the portico, is a handsomely designed, well-maintained example of a style that is not commonly found in the city. Also, the addition of Craftsman style detailing is sensitively done and allows the building to be seen as a transitional design spanning the decades before and after the turn of the century. Early city tax records indicate that A.W. Lawrence owned the property above described in 1884. Prior to that, the area had been known as Thompson's Grove. It was unimproved until 1886-1887. In 1886 Augustine Minor acquired the lot and a year later completed building a residence upon it. Augustine minor was the brother of E.S. Minor (see 212 S. Seventh) and was the Sheriff of Door Co. as well as the City Marshall in the 1890s. 122 S. Seventh has been the home of Stanley R. Greene a long term Mayor of Sturgeon Bay. Greene was also an eminent local historian, as a glance through the historical overview bibliography will indicate. House has been recently sided in vinyl (2000). |
