Additional Information: | A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, Division of Historic Preservation. This two-story commercial structure is built of rock-faced local limestone set as coursed ashlar. It is vaguely rennaissance revival in style with larger blocks of stone set below the windows of the first floor to the gorund and with a cornice formed with a series of corbels at the parapet. The masonry openings have not been altered although the original entries and show windows have been replaced or covered over. Despite the inappropriate treatment of the show windows and entries, this building is of architectural significance as the best remaining example of the use of local limestone in a commercial structure in the west side (Sawyer) commercial district. Felix and his wife operated this hotel/bar until they died in 1940. The property was inherited by Rose Marie Fortemps Mathy who shortly sold to a Remy. Cornice may be missing (2000). |
