NOTES
Additional Information: THIS ONE-STORY BUILDING FEATURES A U-SHAPED PLAN CONFIGURATION, A BRICK EXTERIOR AND A HIPPED-ROOF. THE PROJECTING, CENTRAL BAY HAS A ROUNDED-ARCH ENTRANCE, WHICH DISPLAYS A TRANSOM LIGHT OVER THE DOOR. THIS BUILDING WAS CONSTRUCTED IN 1927 AND 1928 (SEE BIB. REF. A, B), AND AN ADDITION WAS MADE IN C. 1955 (SEE BIB. REF. B). OVERALL, THE CONDITION OF THE HOSPITAL IS EXCELLENT. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND: DR. WILLIAM REESE ESTABLISHED THE CITY'S FIRST HOSPITAL IN C. 1899 AND, ACCORDING TO A 1943 NEWSPAPER ARTICLE, THIS THREE-BED FACILITY WAS LOCATED ON THE SECOND FLOOR OF THE ROGERS BLOCK (206 N. IOWA STREET, 44/13) AND THE ADJOINING ROWE BUILDING (210 N. IOWA STREET, 44/14). (SEE BIB. REF. A). (NOTE: THIS LOCATION WAS NOT VERIFIED BY THE SANBORN MAPS -- 1899, 1905, 1915 --WHICH ARE GENERALLY VERY ACCURATE IN LOCATING PUBLIC FACILITIES). REESE'S SMALL HOSPITAL CLOSED WHEN ST. JOSEPH'S HOSPITAL (825 S. IOWA STREET, 49/25) OPENED IN 1914. (SEE BIB. REF. C). THE DODGEVILLE GENERAL HOSPITAL WAS ORGANIZED IN C. 1915 AND OCCUPIED THE UPPER FLOORS OF THE GRAND HOTEL (NO LONGER STANDING), A THREE STORY STRUCTURE AT THE SOUTHEAST CORNER OF S. IOWA AND CHAPEL STREETS. (THE HOSPITAL IS SHOWN ON THE 1915 SANBORN MAP). IN MAY 1919, THIS INSTITUTION WENT BANKRUPT, BUT IN NOVEMBER OF THE SAME YEAR, IT WAS SOLD TO DR. REESE (SEE ABOVE) AND REOPENED. TWO YEARS LATER (MARCH 1921) THE HOSPITAL WAS CLOSED. (SEE BIB. REF. C, D). IN APRIL 1926, THE DODGEVILLE GENERAL HOSPITAL WAS REORGANIZED AN AGAIN LOCATED IN THE GRAND HOTEL. (A HOSPITAL IS NOTED ON THE 1927 SANBORN MAP). AT THIS TIME, TOO, THE NEED FOR A MODERN BUILDING WAS RECOGNIZED, AND ACCORDINGLY, LAND WAS PURCHASED ON E. NORTH STREET. THE NEW HOSPITAL, A TWENTY FOUR-BED, FIREPROOF BUILDING, WAS COMPLETED IN EARLY 1928. (SEE BIB. REF. A, D). AN ADDITION WAS BUILT IN 1955. (SEE BIB. REF. B). TODAY, THE STRUCTURE SERVES AS A MEDICAL CARE FACILITY OF THE MEMORIAL HOSPITAL OF IOWA COUNTY.
