Additional Information: | A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. One story gabled wing to south; sensitively remodeled into office building. Marker commemorates 1912 flood. "South of the depot on Clarke Island is the site of George Stevens' second mill, better known as the Clarke Mill after John C. Clarke who operated it until the 1880s. In 1904, the Commercial style building, now housing Wausau Paper Mills headquarters, was built as a Wisconsin River hydroelectric plant. A bronze plaque on the building reminds of Wausau's worst disaster, the 1912 flood. Beneath the inscription, "Lest You Forget," citizens are warned to deal with floods "which are as certain as the passing of time.""
