Additional Information: | This building originally was constructed as three separate buildings. Around 1920 they were joined architecturally by a brick facade and a simple Twentieth Century Commercial parapet. In the 1950s, they were further joined together for Edith's dress shop and bridal store. The facade that appears above the sign is painted white. The large sign is constructed of porcenalized enamel panels with the word "Edith's" running across most of it. Under the sign is a metal overhang and large 1950s era show windows. While the sign and storefront of this building detracts from its significance as a Twentieth Century Commercial building, enough of the parapet, often the only decorative element of the style on simple buildings, is exposed to make the building contributing to the overall architectural significance of the North Main Street Historic District. The 1950s era storefront and sign is unaltered and in the future, if it remains unaltered, it will contribute to this historic district as a good example of its type. Numerous businesses were housed in this building before Edith's. Edith's has been in the building since the 1940s, as a dress shop. It took over the entire building some time in the 1950s. It is of interest as the long time home of Edith's, a significant retail business in Fond du Lac that draws a regional trade. |
