Additional Information: | Photo code #2: 74FD-27/29. This large two story commercial vernacular building is constructed of brick that is painted white. The building has a pressed metal cornice with brackets and dentils. Under this cornice is a row of brick corbels. The upper floor windows consist of single light double hung sashes that have been partially covered up on two thirds of the building. Above these windows are small arched openings that are enclosed. An older photograph shows that these windows were once filled in with glazing with vertical muntins. Between these window units are swags. The northern two thirds of the building has a modern storefront featuring large porcenelized enamel panels ane large show windows. The southern third of the building has a modern storefront with smaller show windows and a large panel of vertical boards. This building has some architectural interest as an example of commercial vernacular architecture. This building was probably built, in part, for the O'Brien Dry Goods story, and they occupied it until 1904. It was also the home for drug store, jewelry stores, shoe stores and amocie theatre. This building has some historical interest as an example of a large commercial block that housed numerous retail businesses throughout its history. |
