Additional Information: | A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. This two story commercial vernacular building is constructed of cream bricks that are painted on one side of the building. The building has a cornice decorated with modillions and dentils. The building's frieze is defined by a thin stone entablature that is undecorated. The building has a central entry pavilion that projects slightly from the front wall. On the northern half of the building the upper floor windows rae two over two light double hung sashes decorated with segmental arches and window surrounds. There are stone sills supported by brick corbels. On the southern portion of the building the upper windows have been replaced by two large single light double hung sashes. The first floor storefronts have been altered, with the northern storefront more radically with permanstone and glass blocks. A central entrance on the first floor sits in a round brick arch with an enclosed transom. This building has some architectural interest as a good example of a commercial vernacular building in this district. Many businesses have occupied the storefronts of this building. One of the oldest is a drug store operated by Stiles and Givens, then by S.B. Stiles, then by Sallade and Ruh, and during the mid twentieth century, the McCarthy Drug Co. This building has some historical interest because it well represents various commercial activity that took place in this district in the nineteenth and twentieth century. |
