This house is architecturally significant as a fine and unusual example of the Tudor Revival style. The form and massing of the building, along with the casement windows, the half-timbering, and liberal use of stone trim are all elements of the style. But they are used in an unusual manner in this design, a more formal interpretation of the style. The overall high quality of materials and workmanship in the building make it a distinctive house.
This was the home of Hans and Anna Kraut between 1932 and 1942. Hans Kraut was the president and general manager of the Giddings and Lewis Company, Fond du Lac's premier industry in the twentieth century.
This house is the home of Hans Kraut, who was the president of Giddings and Lewis during the time he lived here. It was during the twentieth century that Giddings and Lewis rose from a small machine tool company into an international leader in industrial technology. As president of the company during the mid-twentieth century, Kraut was, in part, responsible for this rise.
