| Additional Information: | 1995- "This is the "Block House Bridge," a steel, Warren type pony-truss structure with vertical substruts, inclined end posts, one lane wide with an asphalt deck, and concrete abutments. It is approximately 25 feet long. According to a plaque affixed to the bridge, it was fabricated by the Northwest Bridge and Iron Co. of Milwaukee and erected in 1921 for the Wisconsin Highway Commission. According to Cultural Resources Management in Wisconsin (v. II, p.12-6), a 1983 survey of highway bridges identified 483 Warren ponytruss bridges remaining in Wisconsin. This is by far the most prevalent truss type highway bridge remaining in the state. Several of this number have undoubtedly been demolished since 1983. However, hundreds probably remain. The Block House Bridge was probably not among those reviewed in the field as part of the 1983 survey since it does not appear on the Wisconsin Inventory of Historic Places. It has no distinctive or unusual features that make it worthy of future study. The Wisconsin Inventory of Historic Places lists five other bridges in Grant County. Four are Pratt-type through-trusses. Although the Pratt-type throughtruss is a much rarer highway bridge type -- the 1983 survey identified 133 as remaining at the time -- two of these four bridges are recorded in the inventory as being not eligible for the National Register. The other bridge in the inventory is a Pratttype pony-truss bridge.
