NOTES
Additional Information:#650: Garage.

Large, late Queen Anne featuring two story polygonal bay on front facade. Siding has stripped most ornamentation. Palladian window in front gable; pedimented porch.

As of 2005, no changes have occurred to the exterior of this house since it was last surveyed in 1985.
Survey information from 1985/1988 indicated that this house was built in 1895; however, Sanborn maps identify that a different house was located on this lot as early as 1887.Assessor's records note an 1897 date of construction for this house; however, it appears to have been built between 1899 and 1900. Original owner Herman Schmitz was a partner in the hardware business of Wernecke & Schmitz. Herman died in 1934 and the house was altered for two-family use by no later than 1942.

July 2005-This two and one half story residence is sheathed with wide aluminum siding and is topped with a gabled roof. The primary (west) façade is dominated by a two story bay which covers two thirds of the elevation; an altered and open gabled porch occupies the remaining one third. A gabled roof dormer extends over the west façade and tops the bay, as well as hangs slightly over the second floor. A series of three windows with six over one light sashes occupy the gabled peak, while windows throughout the remainder of the house are largely one over one sashes, some of which retain multiple light, wooden storms.

Built circa 1900, the original owner of this house was Herman Schmitz, a partner in the hardware business of Wernecke & Schmitz, which was located a few blocks to the north at 939 S. 8th Street. Herman passed away in 1934 and the house was utilized as a two family property rental by no later than 1942.

No information was found to suggest eligibility under Criterion A or B. Regarding Criterion C, this house is a vernacular form that offers no architectural elements that might otherwise suggest eligibility. A DOE is not needed.
