Additional Information: | Small gabled ell covered in asphalt siding and without architectural ornamentation. As of 2005, no changes have been made to its exterior appearance since surveyed in 1985. As a result of the city intensive survey from 1988, this house was previously identified as the Ernst Weyner Residence and built in 1892. However, based on the 1893 plat book, the house was not built until 1894. As well, Ernst Wagner (not Weyner) lived across the street at 1204 S. 8th Street, not at this address. While Ernst may have retained ownership of the home, the earliest known occupant of the house was machinist Ladislaus Cherney in 1909. July 2005-Rising from a brick foundation, this one story, asphalt sheathed residence is essentially a front gabled house with a one story wing to the north; a gabled and open porch extends from the front (west) of the house. Windows throughout the house are one over one light sashes, some of which are covered with two over two storms. As a result of the 1988 intensive survey, this house was identified as the Ernst Wagner Residence and was noted as built circa 1892. However, city directories indicate that Wagner lived across the street at 1204 S. 8th Street. While it is possible that Ernst owned the home but did not live there, the first known occupant of the home was machinist Ladislaus Cherney and his wife Annie in 1909. The next known owner was Mrs. Anna Engels in 1932; she remained in the home until at least 1953. No information was found to suggest eligibility under Criterion A or B. Regarding Criterion C, the house is a vernacular example of a one story, gabled residence which offers no architectural features that might otherwise suggest eligibility. |
