NOTES
Additional Information:#650: Garage. Simple front gabled house. First floor windows and door are roundhead as with other house in the city dating from the 1860's and 1870's. However, the rest of the first floor windows and all the second floor windows are squared off representing later construction or modificaton. The house may well date in some form to the 1870's with maj9r remodelling in 1870 as per the ocnty tax rolls. City directory research was not conclusive. Thomas Windiate was an early businessman most noted for his hotel, hte Windiate House. He moved to Manitowoc in 1855 and purchased the National House hotel which was demolished after he built the Windiate House in teh early 1860's. The Windiate House remained in operation until after World War I. Windiate was also active in construction ventures, contracting to build the first government piers in the harbor and the first north side high school. From 1870 to 1880, Windiate also operated a shipyard. He was also an active investor in the early plank roads and railroads in Manitowoc. This house was owned and lived in by one of Manitowoc's early businessmen and this home, although much altered, is all that remains which can be directly connected to his life in the city.
