It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the State Historical Society, Division of Historic Preservation. This building was constructed as the Manitowoc Vocational School. The school was founded in 1911 following a Legislative directive that all communities over 5,000 people provide a vocational training facility. The building currently houses a variety of functions including the Manitowoc County Historical Society. 2017- "This two-story Collegiate Gothic school building was constructed in 1931. It was designed by local Manitowoc architect William J. Raeuber, and features a flat roof and multi-colored face brick walls separated into bays by shallow brick buttresses capped with plain stone coping. Window openings throughout the building, originally containing three or four multi-paned windows, have been completely or partially filled in with slightly recessed brick. Entrances are located on both the Clark and 14th Street elevations. They are slightly recessed into a rounded stone arch and flanked by tall, narrow window openings, now partially filled in. Above the modern glass doors are the original multi-pane arched transoms. Original hexagonal sconces flank the stone arches, and shallow pilasters that originally extended beyond the crenellated parapet have been truncated at the roofline. A gymnasium is located on the western elevation. A one-story addition to the north elevation was constructed in 1941, originally housing a welding shop." -"City of Manitowoc Boundaries", WisDOT#1500-37-00, 1500-47-00, 4560-12-00, Prepared by Kelly Noack, (2017). |
