NOTES
Additional Information:The complex is comprised of a series of astylistic utilitarian brick and metal clad industrial buildings dating from 1916 to 1986. Retention of important architectural features is minimal. The Manitowoc Public Utilities power plant is thent vestige of a power generation system that started in 1889 when local banker and investor, John L. Schuette, won the franchise to build a private electric utility from the Manitowoc Common Council. The first power plant was located on Quay Street next to Schuette's Oriental Flour Mill. The utility started slowly by continued to grow. In 1914, the City purchased the utility and has owned and operated it since in concert with the water utility, purchased i 1911. The utility had no mroe room to expand at the Quay Street site and the operation was moved to the present site along the water utility in 1916. Since that time, numerous expansions and additions in 1919, 1924, 1929-30, 1931, 1935, 1942, 1951 and 1962 and 1986.
