Additional Information: | THIS TWO STORY FEDERAL AND GREEK REVIVAL HOUSE WAS BUILT IN 1848. IT FEATURES A RECTANGULAR SHAPED PLAN CONFIGURATION, A STONE FOUNDATION, A CLAPBOARD EXTERIOR, A WOOD TRIM, AND AN ASPHALT SHINGLED GABLE ROOF. EAVE RETURNS APPEAR IN THE OPEN GABLED ENDS. THE FRONT ENTRANCE IS DESIGNED WITH A CLASSICAL DOOR SURROUND, COMPLETE WITH A DENTICULATED CORNICE, SIDELIGHTS AND PILASTERS. SIX-OVER-SIX WINDOWS, CORNER BOARDS AND FRIEZE BOARDS FURTHER DISTINGUISH THIS HOUSE. THE RESIDENCE IS IN GOOD CONDITION. The section to the right of the present front door is the original square, two story, one room deep house. In 1875, the Greek Revival details were added to the house when it was made rectangular in shape. The one story additions to the left of the house were constructed at the beginning of the twentieth century. The rear additions were constructed in the 1960s and the dormer was added in the 1970s. [I] INDIVIDUALS ASSOCIATED WITH THIS DWELLING AND THE DATES OF THEIR ASSOCIATION INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING: WILLIAM T. HENRY, FROM 1848 TO 1885; SAMUEL HARRIS, IN 1890; AND GEORGE MASTEN, FROM 1895 TO 1915. (SEE BIB. REF. A). Henry lived in Indiana, Missouri and Illinois before coming to Wisconsin. He opend a store in a log cabin on this site and in 1836 became the first official postmaster of the community with the post office in his store. The log cabin was replaced in 1848 with the start of this building. |
