Additional Information: | SEE COUNTY RESOURCE FILE. Four story and basement Contemporary style structure with alternating vertical bays of red brick interspersed with inset window panels; flat roof. Structure runs east and west and has entrances on the first and second floors, at east and west ends and at the southwest corner, including through a connecting link on the second floor to Mayer Hall (c.f.). The color, scale and siting of this modern building are compatible with the campus and the Near East Side Historic District. Supplanting Pearsons Hall of Science as thec enter of teaching and laboratory work in the natural sciences, the Beloit Science Center is a complex of two buildsing, connected by an elevated walkway, and a greenhouse, and consists of the Chamberlin Hall of Science, the Mayer Lecture Hall (the Morgan and the Wilson lecture rooms) and teh Kohler Science Library. Ground was broken for the complex on May 15, 1965, but building was delayed through some mixup over governmental funding. The ribbon cutting for opening the building took place on September 30, 1967, and formal dedication was held on May 18, 1968. In addition to the structures mentioned there is an observatory atop Chamberlin Hall. The building contains all facilities for teaching in the sciences and mathematics, and it also houses the computer center. The most modern of laboratory equipment complements the classroom facilities and the seminar rooms provided for each discipline. The landscaping for the complex was deisgned by Franz Lipp. |
