DESCRIPTION OF COMPLEX:
The Kettle Moraine State Forest - Northern Unit (13 19E-11) is located between Plymouth and Campbellsport on Highway 67, in parts of Fond du Lac, Sheboygan, and Washington counties. The four units of Kettle Moraine include the Northern Unit, Loew's Lake Unit, Lapham Peak Unit, and the Southern Unit. The State Forest was established in 1936, and today covers 27,300 acres.
The architecture of the State Forest is split between what were once private residences and structures built specifically for park use. The headquarters for the Kettle Moraine State Forest is located near New Prospect, and is one of the Northern Unit's potential Historic Districts. The three buildings that exist there are the ranger's residence (59/6, 1940), an office (59/5, 1941), and an office/garage complex (59/4, 1941). All three buildings share similar building materials and construction details. Both the residence and the office have fieldstone ground floors, and newport green wood siding on the second and attic stories. The office/garage complex is built enirely of fieldstone, with sparse wood trim. The residence is side gabled, with a large dormer. The office has a hip roof, and the office/garage complex has a modified jerkinhead. The three buildings are grouped in a park like setting that serves as the garage and main offices for forestry managment workers.
The other coherent group of buildings is located within the Mauthe Lake Recreation Area, near New Prospect. At Mauthe Lake, there are three main structures that are constructed of similar materials, and some improvements that share similar construction techniques. The bath house (59/13, 1939), the lakeside shelter building (59/14, 1939), and the campground shower building (59/13, 1939). All three buildings are Rustic style, constructed of large fieldstones, with camp brown wood trim. A unique feature to the bath house and the shower building are windows that are framed above eye level, essentially serving as clerestory windows. The lakeside shelter building has a dog trot style plan, with a massive fieldstone chimney on the north side. The chimney has an exterior fireplace as well. All of the buildings have exposed log rafter tails. The grouping at Mauthe Lake is in excellent condition.
The private structures that are on Northern Unit land are not historically significant. Two farmsteads (59/7-12), one in ruins (59/2,3), are on State Forest grounds. Neither is close to being in its original condition. Significant alterations have taken place to both these farmsteads. |
