Originally served as a library and a science building for Milton College. It is believed Andrew Carnegie donated $6,500 toward the library that was once housed in this building. The building was named for Milton College president Reverend William Whitford who served from 1856 to 1902. The cost of construction was $30,000.

2012 UPDATE: THE MOST IMPORTANT GROUP THAT DONATED FUNDS FOR THIS BUILDING WAS THE WOMAN'S VILLAGE IMPROVEMENT CLUB. FOUNDED IN 1904 SPECIFICALLY TO RAISE MONEY FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF THIS BUILDING, THE WOMAN'S IMPROVEMENT CLUB BECAME ONE OF MILTON'S MOST PROMINENT WOMEN'S ORGANIZATIONS OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY.
