Additional Information: | This simple brick office building was originally one story in height and featured a parapet and overhanging, bracketed cornice reminiscent of the Prairie School in residences. The second story and rear third of the building was added in an almost immediate expansion of the building in 1913. The msot notable architectural feature is the heavy concrete door surround which is original to the building. The Kunz Brewery in Manitowoc was founded in 1863-4 when George Kunz purchased the Hottelmann Brewery on the corner of 9thy and Marshall Streets. The Hottelmann Brewery was the city's first, founded in 1849. In 1872, this brewery passed out of family ownership, only to be repurchased in 1890. The Kunz, Bleser Brewing Company was hurt by Prohibition and joined with Rahr Malting and Schreihart Brewery to become the Manitowoc Products Company, manufacturing a number of food related projects. In 1924, the name wsa changed to Kingsbury Brewers Company and the production of "near beer" began. Kingsbiury was acquired by the G. Heilemann Brewing Company of La Crosse in the early 1950's and the brewery itself closed and demolished in the early 1960's. The office building and stables are all that remain of the complex. |
