Additional Information: | This large side gabled gambel roofed Colonial Revival home is stuccoed on the first floor and features a center entrance with lights on top and both sides. A polygonal bay window is found to the immediate west. A sunroom extension is on th east end. The gambrel roof extends down the second floor facade to meet and slightlyb overhang the first floor giving the appearance of a smaller house. Four pedimented gable dormers pierce the roof. The side gables are clap[board. This is a unique version of the Colonial Revival for this period. Other examples of this style dating from the early twentieth century are more traditionally rendered. This home was built by Charles C. West in 1905 on the occasion of his marriage. C.C. West was one of the original founders of the Manitowoc Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company in 1902. He served as the company's first General Manager until 1920 when he became President./ He remained in that role until his death in 1957. C.C. West bears the greatest development of the Manitowoc Company whicfh was, at one time, the City's largest employer. Along with several others, he purchased the original Burger and Rand Boatbuilding Company in 1902 and started the Manitowoc Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company. The company wsa largely involved in marine construciton and rehabilitation until its steam crane division was started in the 1920's. During WWII, the company gained fame for its construction of submarines. West's home is considered significant for its association with West during his entire career with the company but one year. |
