Additional Information: | Intact cornice defined by two store string courses, arched doors surorunded with lights. 2023: This 1-story Colonial Revival library building was constructed in 1937 as a branch library serving the city’s south side. The building was designed by Manitowoc architect William Raeuber with Hamann Construction Company serving as general contractor. It is cross-shaped in plan with a concrete foundation, red brick walls, and a flat roof. The front elevation faces south and is symmetrical in composition. A projecting center mass contains a round-arched opening within which is located the front door. Above the front door is a multi-pane fanlight. The door is of paneled wood construction and is accented by narrow sidelights (these appear to be boarded over) with narrow Ionic columns flanking both sidelights. The brick surround around the door is accented by a contrasting stone keystone. The door features a tiled threshold and is accessed via a concrete stoop with metal handrails. The front wall of the main building mass, on each side of the projecting center mass, contains large, singly-placed multi-pane windows with stone lintels that feature contrasting center stones. A cornice originally comprised of parallel stone bands, the uppermost of which is projected further from the building, appears to have been clad in metal or vinyl with matching coping along the roofline. Between the two cornice bands, a stone panel reads “BRANCH LIBRARY.” A brick beltcourse wraps around the building just above the raised foundation wall. |
