Additional Information: | A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. Architectural Description: Located east of the railroad tracks on the south side of Main Street, this cream brick two story tobacco warehouse was constructed in 1888, according to the datestone. The two story brick addition on the east was added between 1912 and 1926. (C). The original section is three bays wide by six bays deep. Regular fenestration pierces both the first and second story of the Main Street elevation, while the side wall fenestration is irregular. Shouldered segmental arch lintels with keystones cap not only the main elevation windows, but also the front entrances and many windows on the side elevation. Simple wooden stairs and a landing provide access to the main entrance which has a lintel identical to those found on the windows. The two story, four bay wide brick addition has similar lintels, although they are smaller and lack the keystone. Two brick chimneys and two metal vents break the moderately pitched gable roof surface. All windows have been boarded up. Other construction elements include a rectangular shaped plan configuration (with additions), a brick exterior and trim, and an asphalt shingled gable and flat roof. The building is in fair condition. Architectural Significance: This warehouse gains importance as one of three remaining warehouses on East Main Street in Stoughton. While it is slightly simpler in architectural detail than its neighbors, the use of the keystones and corbelling in the window lintels provides visual interest. The east most building of the concentration of transportation/agri-industrial - related buildings on East Main Street, it has significance in defining the edge of the warehouse district from the residential neignborhood to the east. Historical Background: In 1884, a wood frame passenger railroad depot was located on this site. (C). By 1887 or 1888 the depot was removed and a two story brick tobacco warehouse had been constructed for the Lee and Roe Tobacco company. (C, A). By 1898 it was the O. C. Lee Tobacco Warehouse. (C). The 1904-08 directory lists Ole C. Lee as a tobacco buyer. (B). The building was used by the Holtan Tobacco Company in the mid 1920s. Historical Significance: The dependance of the tobacco industry on the local railroad is clear from the proximity of the warehouse to the tracks and freight depot. The success of the tobacco industry is reflceted in the architectural details and massive scale of this warehouse. The property represents the Wholesale Trade element of the Commerce Theme for Stoughton. August 2013: Northeast addition razed; new windows, doors, roof; concrete stoop/graded walkway with metal railings added August 2019: Appearance unchanged |
