NOTES
Additional Information:THIS THREE-STORY RETAIL BUILDING, DESIGNED IN THE COMMERCIAL VERNACULAR STYLE, WAS CONSTRUCTED IN 1857 (SEE BIB. REF. A), WITH ADDITIONS MADE TO IT BEFORE 1884. THE STRUCTURE FEATURES AN IRREGULAR SHAPED PLAN CONFIGURATION, A STONE FOUNDATION, A STONE EXTERIOR, A STONE TRIM AND A FLAT ROOF. STONE LINTELS AND SILLS ADORN THE SECOND-STORY SIX-OVER-SIX WINDOWS. PROJECTING FORWARD OVER THE STOREFRONT AND VISUALLY SEPARATING THE FIRST AND SECOND STORIES IS A WOODEN CORNICE DETAILED WITH DENTIL TRIM, BRACKETS AND PENDANTS. THIS CORNICE, WHICH WAS DATED 1890, ORIGINALLY HAD A CENTERED ENTRANCE APPEARING BENEATH IT. LARGE SCALE STONE ADDITIONS ARE ATTACHED AT THE REAR. THE BUILDING IS IN GOOD CONDITION.

THE NAMES BY WHICH THIS BUILDING WAS HISTORICALLY KNOWN ARE INDICATIVE OF ITS COMMERCIAL VITALITY. THESE NAMES INCLUDE THE GUNDRY AND THOMAS BUILDING (SEE BIB. REF. A), THE GUNDRY AND GRAY HARDWARE (SEE BIB. REF. B), THE HOCKING AND JENKINS HARDWARE, AND THE JENKINS AND SONS HARDWARE (SEE BIB. REF. C). THE HARDWARE STORE CONDUCTED BUSINESS AT THIS SITE FROM 1857 TO 1929. (SEE BIB. REF. A, B, C).

THIS BUILDING WAS DESIGNATED LOCALLY, BECOMING PART OF THE MINERAL POINT LANDMARK DISTRICT IN 1972.

2012- "Constructed by Joseph Gundry & Richard Thomas. Jooseph Gundry first came to Mineral Point from Cornwall in 1845; after a trip back to Cornwall in 1847 to take care of family business he returned to Mineral Point in 1848 with his new wife, Sarah Perry Gundry. This was the third location for his dry goods business.

Businesses here were Gundry's Cheap Cash Store; Gundry & Gray Dry Goods; S. Hocking Hardware; Hocking & Jenkins Hardware; Nick Gerlach Hardware; Hollister Jones Plumbing Shop; Paul Terrill Plumbing; and R. F. Potter Gallery."
