Additional Information:THIS TWO-STORY ITALIANATE RETAIL BUILDING WAS CONSTRUCTED IN 1897. (SEE BIB. REF. A). IT FEATURES A RECTANGULAR SHAPED PLAN CONFIGURATION, A STONE FOUNDATION, A BRICK EXTERIOR, A WOOD AND METAL TRIM AND A FLAT ROOF. THE ELABORATE CORNICE IS DESIGNED WITH DENTIL TRIM AND FLUTED COLUMNS. PROJECTING FORWARD ON THE SECOND STORY OF THE FACADE ARE TWO, RECTANGULAR SHAPED BAY WINDOWS. A SIMILARLY DESIGNED, SECOND-STORY BAY WINDOW APPEARS ON THE SIDE FACE AS WELL. ATTACHED AT THE REAR AND FRONTING FOUNTAIN STREET IS A LARGE, TWO STORY BRICK ADDITION. (SEE PHOTO CODE IA 15/4). IT WAS BUILT ON THE REMAINS OF AN EARLIER 1877 STONE BUILDING WHICH WAS DAMAGED IN A FIRE OCCURRING IN 1897. (SEE BIB. REF. C). CONSTRUCTION OF THIS ADDITION TOOK PLACE BETWEEN 1900 AND 1908. (SEE BIB. REF. B). THE BUILDING IS IN GOOD CONDITION.

THE HISTORIC NAMES OF THIS BUILDING INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING: MARTIN AND TOAY HARDWARE STORE; AND THE N. T. MARTIN BUILDING. (SEE BIB. REF. A). THE HARDWARE STORE CONDUCTED BUSINESS AT THIS SITE FROM 1897 TO 1929. (SEE BIB. REF. A).

THIS BUILDING WAS DESIGNATED LOCALLY, BECOMING PART OF THE MINERAL POINT LANKMARK DISTRICT IN 1972.

2012- "Built by N.T. Martin and James Toay to replace their hardware store that was destroyed in the fire of 1897. Both Martin and Toay were born in Mineral Point. Toay's father came from Cornwall and was the mason in partnership with Philip Allen, Sr.

Businesses at this location were Martin and Toay Hardware; W.J. Morgan, Dentist; N.T. Martin Hardware; Russell Dairy; Argall Dairy; and Mineral Point Medical Center."
