NOTES
Additional Information:A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the State Historical Society, Division of Historic Preservation. To be demolished 3/1997. Building is sided in asphalt. Second building on property is brick with a corbelled cornice. The Smalley Manufacturing Company is among the earliest of remaining commercial or industrial concerns. Founded in 1857 by Edmund Jewett Smalley, Smalley Manufacturing started as a foundry and factory for building walking plows. Over the years, the list of implements manufactured here grew. The factory remains today as a small machine tool manufacturer and jobs shop. The easternmost building, now sided in asphalt shingles, in some state of deterioration, is, according to plant officials, the original plant which was moved from the corner of 6th and York Streets in 1883 to make way for the first portion of that brick building which was expanded in 1910.
