Additional Information: | This landward portion of a papermill complex is a rectangular, two-story utilitarian building, adjacent to a taller riverine structure. Built of reinforced concrete, it has eight bays of multi-story windows divided by piers with plinth bases and spanned by recessed lintel panels. A striated cornice below the metal-trimmed wall parapet is slightly corbeled, matching the banked, striated sills of the windows below. The window openings of the bays have all been reduced by glass block or cement infill. The three right bays, filled by glass block, have first story sash inserts. The two center bays and the bay left of center, filled by cement, have randomly placed, metal-framed casement inserts in both stories. The upper casements are the only exterior indication of the level of the second floor . The first story of the two left bays is filled with cement, the upper story with glass block. A door in the right bay, set below the present grade, is the entrance to the building. A flat roof, masked by the wall parapet, supports an array pf protruding smokestacks and vents. On same property is a Georgian Revival office building of the Gilbert Paper Company. See record #0059514 for history of the company. |
