Additional Information: | COMMERCIAL VERNACULAR IN STYLE, THIS ONE STORY BUILDING WAS CONSTRUCTED IN 1900. (SEE BIB. REF. A). IT FEATURES A RECTANGULAR SHAPED PLAN CONFIGURATION, BRICK EXTERIOR WALLS, A GLASS BLOCK TRIM AND A FLAT ROOF. ABOVE THE STOREFRONT, A GLASS BLOCK TRANSOM ADDS ADORNMENT. THE STRUCTURE ORIGINALLY HAD A BRICK PEDIMENT, WHICH WAS PLACED AT THE TOP OF THE FACADE, AND A PYRAMIDAL-CROWNED BELL TOWER, WHICH RESTED ON THE FLAT ROOF. (SEE BIB. REF. B). THE BELL WAS MOVED TO A NEW FIRE STATION. THIS STRUCTURE IS IN GOOD CONDITION. THE HISTORIC NAMES OF THIS BUILDING ARE AS FOLLOWS: THE MINERAL POINT FIRE COMPANY BUILDING (SEE BIB. REF. B), AND THE STUDE CLOTHING STORE (SEE BIB. REF. C). THE FIRE STATION WAS HOUSED AT THIS SITE IN 1900. (SEE BIB. REF. A). (NOTE: ACCORDING TO THE INTENSIVE SURVEY DESCRIBING THIS PROPERTY, THE BUILIDNG WAS FOUND TO BE NON-CONTRIBUTING TO THE HISTORIC DISTRICT). THE BUILDING WAS DESIGNATED LOCALLY, BECOMING PART OF THE MINERAL POINT LANDMARK DISTRICT IN 1972. 2012- "The Mineral Point Fire Department began Oct. 13, 1898, with the formation and funding of Hook & Ladder Company #1. Before that time, local residents simply dropped what they were doing and rushed to the scene of a fire, with no formal organization and no equipment other than buckets for a bucket brigade. The 1908 Sanborn map shows a Fire House with "Bell on Roof; 50 men volunteers; one Hook & Ladder; Two Hose Carts, 1500' 2-1/2" hose." The original pyramidal bell tower was replaced in 1914. The facade was altered in the mid-20th century with glass blocks and plate glass shop windows; it was restored to an approximation of its original appearance in 2006. Businesses at this location were Stude's Clothing; Dan Aschliman Clothing; High Street Fashions; R & R Station; Karate Studio; and Phoebe's Nest." -from "A Field Guide to Mineral Point" by Nancy Pfotenhauer of the Mineral Point Historical Society, 1st Edition, 2012, Little Creek Press. |
