Additional Information: | DESIGNED IN THE COMMERCIAL VERNACULAR STYLE, THIS ONE-STORY RETAIL BUILDING WAS CONSTRUCTED IN 1866. (SEE BIB. REF. A). IT FEATURES A RECTANGULAR SHAPED PLAN CONFIGURATION, A STONE FOUNDATION, A STONE EXTERIOR, A WOOD TRIM AND A FLAT ROOF. THE STOREFRONT - THE ORIGINAL OF WHICH HAD CAST IRON COLUMNS - WAS REHABILITATED IN A HISTORIC MANNER DURING THE YEARS 1991 AND 1992. THE STRUCTURE IS IN GOOD CONDITION. KNOWN HISTORICALLY AS THE RICHARD PENHALLEGAN BUILDING (SEE BIB. REF. A), AND AS THE C. W. SPRINGEL CIGAR AND TOBACCO STORE (SEE BIB. REF. B), THIS BUILDING HOUSED COMMERCIAL VENTURES FROM 1866 TO 1929. (SEE BIB. REF. A). THESE VENTURES INCLUDED A TAILOR SHOP IN 1884, AND A CIGAR SHOP IN 1894. R. PENHALLEGAN OWNED THE BUILDING IN 1871 AND C.F. Springer OWNED IT IN 1917 AND IN 1924. It was then known as the C. Springer Cigar and Tobacco Store. THE BUILDING WAS DESIGNATED LOCALLY, BECOMING PART OF THE MINERAL POINT LANDMARK DISTRICT IN 1972. 2012- "Built by Richard Penhallegan, a shoemaker. In spite of his very Cornish sounding surname, the 1860 census lists his birthplace as Scotland. The building had a barn-board facade and false front in the mid-20th century. It was restored to its original configuration in 1990. Charles W. Springer had a tobacco store and cigar factory here in the late 1890s and early 1900s. Others to occupy this space were Mrs. Collins, Millinery; Dresen the Tailor; Agnes Bloom Dress Shop; Magic Mirror Beauty Shop; and Sirius Sunlight Gallery." -from "A Field Guide to Mineral Point" by Nancy Pfotenhauer of the Mineral Point Historical Society, 1st Edition, 2012, Little Creek Press. |
