NOTES
Additional Information:DESIGNED IN THE COMMERCIAL VERNACULAR AND ITALIANATE STYLES, THIS TWO STORY RETAIL BUILDING WAS CONSTRUCTED IN 1907. (SEE BIB. REF. A). IT FEATURES A RECTANGULAR SHAPED PLAN CONFIGURATION, A STONE FOUNDATION, LIMESTONE EXTERIOR WALLS, A METAL AND STONE TRIM AND A HIP ROOF. THE LARGE, BRACKETED CORNICE IS ACCENTED FROM ABOVE BY A SIMILARLY-BRACKETED, TRIANGULAR PEDIMENT. EMBELLISHING THE ONE-OVER-ONE WINDOWS ON THE SECOND STORY ARE STRAIGNT STONE LINTELS AND SILLS, WHICH WERE COMPOSED OF LIMESTONE GATHERED FROM THE GORGEN QUARRY. THIS STRUCTURE IS IN GOOD CONDITION.

HISTORCIALLY KNOWN AS THE GORGEN GROCERY AND MEAT MARKET, THIS BUILDING WAS HOME TO A GROCERY BUSINESS FROM 1907 TO 1929. (SEE BIB. REF. A).

Gorgen's parents came from Germany in 1840; John was born in Wisconsin in 1848. In 1873, he left the family farm to work and attend school in Mineral Point. [C]

THE BUILDING WAS DESIGNATED LOCALLY, BECOMING PART OF THE MINERAL POINT LANDMARK DISTRICT IN 1972.

2012- "Built in 1907 by John Gorgen who was born ihn Germany and came to the Mineral Point area with his parents at the age of 8. The stone used to construct this building was from the Gorgen quarry.

This building replaced a frame structure that had been on the site since the 1840s. The previous building was the original location of the Mineral Point Tribune newspaper and also housed, at various times, Hosking's photograph galllery; Miss Werne, Millinery; Mrs. Burn's Delicatessen ice Cream and Luncheon Parlors; Henry Price, tail; and J. Dresen & Co., Tailors, among other early Mineral Point businesses.

This building was originally the location of Gorgen's grocery and meat market and the Commercial Club, on the 2nd floor. Later it was the site of Mead's Grocery, Doyle Brother' Grocery, then Burgess Battery, active during World War II. It also housed Felderman hardware, Ridnour's High Street Commons, and, more recently, the Bargain Nook."
