NOTES
Additional Information:DESIGNED IN THE COMMERCIAL VERNACULAR AND ITALIANATE STYLES, THIS TWO STORY RETAIL BUILDING WAS CONSTRUCTED IN 1865. (SEE BIB. REF. A). IT FEATURES A RECTANGULAR SHAPED PLAN CONFIGURATION, A STONE FOUNDATION, STONE EXTERIOR WALLS, A STONE TRIM AND A FLAT ROOF. PROJECTING WINDOW CORNICES ACCENTED BY "CROWN" ORNAMENTATION APPEAR ABOVE THE ONE-OVER-ONE WINDOWS IN THE SECOND STORY. 243 HIGH STREET IS RELATED TO THE ADJACENT, HERMAN FICK BUILDING, AT 235 HIGH STREET. (SEE MAP CODE 43/11A). THE ENTIRE STRUCTURE (243 AND 245 HIGH STREET) REPLACES ONE THAT WAS DEMOLISHED BY A FIRE ON THIS SITE IN 1860.

THIS BUILDING (AT 243 HIGH STREET) WAS KNOWN HISTORICALLY BY THE FOLLOWING NAMES: THE COAD AND BOWDEN BUILDING [1871] (SEE BIB. REF. A), THE R. BOWDEN GROCERY AND DRY GOODS STORE (SEE BIB. REF. B), AND THE KINNE AND SPRATLER GROCERY STORE (SEE BIB. REF. C). THE GROCERY BUSINESS PROSPERED AT THE SITE FROM 1865 TO 1884. (SEE BIB. REF. A). OTHER COMMERCIAL VENTURES TO HAVE OCCUPIED THE BUILDING WERE THE GEORGE VARLIN CLOTHIER IN 1917 AND THE PHIL GORGON (UNDERWRITER?) OFFICE.

THE BUILDING WAS DESIGNATED LOCALLY, BECOMING PART OF THE MINERAL POINT LANDMARK DISTRICT IN 1972.

From "A Field Guide to Mineral Point" by Nancy Pfotenhauer of the Mineral Point Historical Society, 1st Edition, 2012, Little Creek Press:
"Built by William Coad and Richard Bowden, both from Cornwall, for commercial rental property. Bowden, a brick and stone mason, came to Minerla Point in the late 1830s or early 1840s; Coad, a carpenter, came to New york with his wife, Elizabeth, in 1847, aboard the immigrant ship Hendrick Hudson and from there to Mineral Point.

Bowden bid on the stone work for the remodeling of the City Hall, the former Iowa County Courthouse, in 1877. He and his son James apparently constructed several other buildings in Mineral Point although the locations of these are not known.

By 1869, Kinne and Spratler had expanded their grocery and bakery business next door into this building. In 1892 Isaac Deller opened a jewelry store here. It has also house Varlin's Clothing store and Phil Gorgen's office. It has been a landromat since the 1970s."

From "Mineral Point Tribune, July 26, 1865:
"We notice Mr. Richard Bowden is busily at work on his new store, now being completed, next to Kinne & Spratler's, on High Street. Hurry up the rocks, gentlemen, the buildings are all needed."
