THIS BUILDING WAS DESIGNATED LOCALLY, BECOMING PART OF THE MINERAL POINT LANDMARK DISTRICT IN 1972.

2012- "Built by John Shanley, who came from Ireland to New Diggins, Wisconsin. After mining there for a few years, he moved to Mineral Point where he opened a livery business. According to census records, in 1850, he lived here with his wife, Elizabeth, one-year-old son, Timothy, and brother, Stephen, and owned $1,000 worth of real estate. In 1860, he is listed as a hotel keeper in 1860, although the hotel was not necessarily this building.

The building was owned by his brother, Andrew Shanley, from 1865 until 1889 and then again by John Shanley from 1890 to 1900. John Shanley purchased a farm in the Town of Moscow in 1872 and lived there until 1885 when he returned to Mineral Point. Shanley's son, Stephen, was a teacher in country schools near Waldwick; his grandson, Stephen T., was the cashier of the Hollandale State Bank in 1913."
