Richard W. Thickens was vice president of Central Paper Company and secretary of Banta Publishing Company. His house on Park Street was constructed in 1920.

The Richard W. Thickens House is situated on Doty Island in a neighborhood bordering Smith Park. Situated on a large lot, the Thickens House is a rectangular two-story residence from the Colonial Revival Period of Cosntruction. The gabled roof material is asphalt, the siding is clapboard and the foundations are random stone. Formally balanced, the front facade consists of pairs of shuttered, double-hung sash windows, nine- over-nine. The center of the facade features a canopied front stoop with a full pediment supported by classic columns. A side wing to the north includes many of these features.

A contributing member of the Smith Park Historic District, the Richard W. Thickens House is architecturally significant as a fine example of Colonial Period Revival architecture.
