Additional Information: | Additional photo code: FCS 6/24. FCS 6/24 - JAMES RIVER PAPER CO. (A) - is a rectangular, two-story, utilitarian building of reinforced concrete construction. Served by attached power and pipelines, it has a shallow gabled roof, a cement block garage addition at rear, and a cast, enclosed cement ramp declining from the upper story of the downstream wall. The building has irregularly sized and positioned fenestration. The upper story of the upstream wall has a vertical metal-framed window left of a corporate emblem panel, and high, horizontal windows at center and right. The center window is metal-framed; the glass block infill of the right window has a metal-framed insert. A pair of flush doors at center, and one at the right, face an open metal walkway that runs along the rear half of the upper wall. Stairs at the left end of the balcony decline outward from the building's center. The rear, riverside wall has the date of construction (1920) cast in the apex of the gable, and large upper-story windows. The right window is infilled with glass block; the left has been reduced with masonry to a high set metal-framed window. A smaller, metal-framed center window is obscured by a metal balcony. Other structures of the contiguous papermill complex obscure the roadside and downstream walls of the building. Previously surveyed in 1988. |
