NOTES
Additional Information:Additional photo code: FCS 6/27. FCS 6/27 - JAMES RIVER PAPER CO. (C) - is a two-story rectangular, flat-roofed industrial building with an exposed concrete frame and an unusual blend of Art Moderne and Tudor Revival details. The frame's upright elements divide the roadside facade into eleven bays. The center and end bays are widened like pavilions and bisected by additional vertical ribs. While the end bays rise slightly above the cornice line, the center bay projects as a false-fronted turret. This historicizing effect and the building's pale frame and contrasting tapestry brick spandrels mimic the palette of the contemporaneous Tudor Revival. The curved tops of the projecting verticals of the center bay recall Art Moderne streamlining. Above the foundation, the horizontals of the frame serve as lintel courses, forming panels of spandrels and windows. The metal-framed center bay windows remain; the side and end bay windows up and down are infille with glass block and have small window or vent insrts. Vent ducts, some rising above the roof, protrude from several windows. An enclosed, metal-sheathed walkway links an upper left bay of this structure to a building across the street.
