Robert Shiells was founder of the 1st National Bank of Neenah, prominent in the Presbyterian Church and an author. An active member of American Scottish Societies, he was also acquainted with Andrew Carnegie, through whome he acquired a grant for Neenah's library.

The house was previously surveyed in 1981 with a map code of 2/4 on a city engineers basemap. The 2004 map code is 144/18a.
