Additional Information: | BUILT IN 1859 (SEE BIB. REF. A), THIS ONE-STORY GABLED ELL FEATURES AN L-SHAPED PLAN CONFIGURATION, A STONE FOUNDATION, AN UNSPECIFIED STONE AND WOOD EXTERIOR, A STONE TRIM, AND AN ASPHALT SHINGLED GABLE ROOF. ALSO APPEARING ON THE PROPERTY IS A NEW WOODEN STORAGE SHED WHICH WAS JUST COMPLETED BY THE OWNER. THE RESIDENCE IS IN GOOD CONDITION. INDIVIDUALS ASSOCIATED WITH THIS HOUSE AND THE DATES OF THEIR ASSOCIATION INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING: LEVI CRAFT, FROM 1858 TO 1860; ROSS AND HENRY IN 1866; MATTHEW GOLDSWORTHY IN 1868; SAMUEL WEBB, FROM 1871 TO 1873; ANNA WEBB, FROM 1875 TO 1877; HANNAH WEBB IN 1890; ED WEBB IN 1895; AND J.A. SADERSTROM, FROM 1900 TO 1925. (SEE BIB. REF. A). THIS DWELLING WAS LOCALLY DESIGNATED AS PART OF THE MINERAL POINT LANDMARK DISTRICT IN 1972. 2012- "Built by Levi Craft who came to Mineral Point from Pennsylvania. Craft's wife, Elizabeth, was the daughter of Charles F. Legate. Legate, born at the family estate known as Legate's Hill, in Massachusetts, was well educated. he came to Mineral Point in 1837, possibly following his brother, Capt. thomas Legate, who had been serving as Superintendent of the Lead Mining District since 1829. Charles Legate built the smelting furnace later taken over by James Spensley. In 1850, Charles Legate and his son-in-law Levi Craft joined the hundreds of aventurers who left Iowa County for the gold fields of California. Craft settled permantently in California, sending for his wife and child, but Legate returned and was appointed District Surveyor and Government Land Agent. In 1970 the house was purchased by Bill and Evie Kitto, who retired from other careers and moved to Mineral Point, acting as curators and moved to Mineral Point, acting as curators of Pendarvis in the years after it was transferred to the Wisconsin Historical Society. The Kittos had a Mineral Point connection as Bill's great grandfather was a Cornish miner who settled here in 1850.
