THIS ONE AND A HALF-STORY SIDE GABLED HOUSE FEATURES A RECTANGULAR SHAPED PLAN CONFIGURATION, A STONE FOUNDATION, A LOG AND STONE EXTERIOR, A WOOD TRIM, AND A WOOD SHINGLED GABLE ROOF. THE LOG PORTION OF THE BUILDING, LOCATED AT THE NORTHWEST END, WAS CONSTRUCTED IN C. 1841. (SEE BIB. REF. H). THE MIDDLE STONE HOUSE WAS BUILT FROM C. 1848 TO 1852. (SEE BIB. REF. H). AN END STONE HOUSE WAS CONSTRUCTED IN C. 1844. (SEE BIB. REF. H). THE RESIDENCE IS IN GOOD CONDITION. JOHN MARTIN WAS AN INDIVIDUAL ASSOCIATED WITH THE LOG PORTION OF THE BUILDING FROM C. 1841 TO C. 1850. EDWARD AND EFFIE WERE TWO MERMBERS OF A BLACK FAMILY WHO LIVED HERE DURING THE POST CIVIL WAR ERA. ANDREW REMFREY WAS AN INDIVIDUAL ASSOCIATED WITH THE MIDDLE STONE PORTION FROM C. 1848 TO 1852. HE RAN IT AS RENTAL PROPERTY. JAMES CARBIS AND RICHARD THOMAS WERE BUILDERS OF THE FAR END STONE STRUCTURE IN C. 1844. IT TOO, WAS PROBABLY RENTAL SPACE. THE ENTIRE PROPERTY WAS TAKEN OVER BY ISAAC TAMBLYN AROUND THE 1860'S AND WAS RUN AS RENTAL UNITS. TAMBLYN DIED IN 1899. MUCH LATER, ROBERT NEAL AND EDGAR HELLUM TOOK POSSESSION OF THIS BUILDING. A REHABILITATION OF THE STRUCTURE TOOK PLACE FROM C. 1963 TO 1965. (SEE BIB. REF. H). THIS BUILDING SERVED AS A HOUSE FROM C. 1841 TO C. 1960. (SEE BIB. REF. H). CURRENTLY KNOWN AS TAMBLYN'S ROW, IT NOW FUNCTIONS AS A MUSEUM. THE BUILDING WAS LOCALLY DESIGNATED AS PART OF THE MINERAL POINT LANDMARK DISTRICT IN 1972. 2012- "John Martin owned the log house at the west end of Tamblyn's Row in 1841 and may have been the builder. Andrew Remfrey owned the middle part of the Row from about 1848 until 1852, and used it as a rental property. Remfrey came from Cornwall before 1834; he was a miner and one of the organizers of the Methodist Episcopal Church in Mineral Point. James Carbis and Richard Thomas, stonemasons from Cornwall, built the stone house on the east end of the Row. Carbis and Thomas also built the Joseph Gundry house at Orchard Lawn in Mineral Point. Isaac Tamblyn, also from Cornwall, owned the property in the 1860s and used all three houses as rental property. Bob Neal and Edgar Hellum purchased the property in the 1960s. During renovation they discovered the intact log house hidden under clapboards. They also unearthed the basement portion of the house on the east and transformed it into a Cornish pub. in keeping with their habit of giving Cornish names to their propereties, they called this one "Tamblyn's Row" possibly in homage to the building on Shake Rag that Neal wanted to buy when he was in high school in Mineral Point." -from "A Field Guide to Mineral Point" by Nancy Pfotenhauer of the Mineral Point Historical Society, 1st Edition, 2012, Little Creek Press. |
