Additional Information: | A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the State Historical Society, Division of Historic Preservation. 2016- "The one-story Portage Prairie School (schoolhouse) was built in 1872.(1) It is of frame construction, sheathed in clapboard, and rests on a modern poured-concrete foundation. The front-gable roof is covered in asphalt shingles and features a central brick chimney and wide eave overhang with wooden frieze. Window openings, now infilled with vertical wood boards, are evenly spaced along the side (north and south) elevations. A rear doorway is now also infilled. A front gable entry vestibule is located on the front (west) facade. The building is now accessed through the interior of the Myrtle Lintner Spear Museum or via a modern entry vestibule located just west of the schoolhouse structure. It features a metal ceiling on the interior. This schoolhouse originally stood in the Town of Randolph near Friesland, which is a small village about 15 miles east of Pardeeville in Columbia County. Built in January 1872 by Owen Williams, major alterations included the addition of a cupboard for library books in 1899, hardwood floors in 1903, and the entry vestibule in 1906. The schoolhouse was moved to its current location and attached to the Columbia County Historical Society/Myrtle Lintner Spear Museum (AHI No. 29982, listed in the National Register) in 1993.(2) Since that time it has been painted and reroofed." -"STH 22: STH 16-CTH CM/Barry Rd", WisDOT#6050-00-01, Prepared by Mead & Hunt, Inc.
