Additional Information: | A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. This fine Queen Anne style house was built by a pharmacist named Ramsland in 1892 and it was bought shortly thereafter by Martin Bekkedal, a highly important figure in Westby's turn-of-the-century commercial life, who among other things was one the important founders of the tobacco industry in Vernon County. His house is still in superb original condition and it was surveyed by the SHPO in 1976, as was a large carriage house behind the house that has since been demolished. 1995- "Martin Bekkedahl house (now the Westby House B&B), VE22/32. This excellent, large scale, highly intact frame construction Queen Anne style house was built in 1892 and within two years became the home of Martin Bekkedahl, who was one of the most historically significant persons in the development of tobacco growing in Vernon County and in the commercial development of Westby. This building is almost certainly eligible for inclusion in the NRHP for its associations with architecture and possibly for its association with a significant historic personage as well, although other excellent buildings associated with Bekkedahl also exist in both Westby and Viroqua. This house has been included in the list of surveyed resources even though it is just outside the APE for Options 2 and 3 because of its location adjacent to the proposed Westby Downtown Historic District. Note: this house was previously surveyed in 1976. A carriage house that was located behind the house at that time has now been demolished." - "USH 14 Transportation Study ", WisDOT ID #1646-07-00, Prepared by Timothy F Heggland (1995). |
