NOTES
Additional Information:A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. F IN THE PHOTO CODES IS SHORT FOR FCS. The largely stone walls and large rooftop cupola are architectural highlights of this two-story Italianate building. The hip-roofed building has rectangular windows with lintels and sills. Wide eaves project over the walls and cupola, which has paired arched openings. This is one of the oldest remaining buildings in Princeton and one of the few historic structures with stone walls in the city. Alterations include the installation of a garage-door entry on the first floor and residing of the cupola walls. Built in 1867, this structure was originally a school for elementary-age children (and possibly for high-school age children as well). It later was used as a fire station and council chambers. The presence of barred windows in the building's rear would indicate it also may have been used as a jail. The significance of this building in the larger educational history of Princeton needs further investigation. Previously surveyed in 1990. Between 1894-1898, the building was converted for various government uses. In the rear are two small additions, added between 1914-1927, a small brink room built of salvaged cream bricks and a concrete walled room. They were used as the local jail until 1964. Alterations converted the first story into the fire department and since 1975, the public works department.
