Additional Information: | A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. J.C. Steinmann, Jr. designed the Bank of Monticello in 1910 and it was constructed in that year by the Karlen & Steinmann Lumber Company. It is a classically-inspired building constructed of brick. Two story pilasters support the entablature which includes the bank's name. In 1925 the original arched entrance was replaced. The Bank of Monticello was organized in 1896 with Jacob Marty as president - a position he held until 1908. (This is not the Jacob Marty who initially owned the land on which Monticello was platted.) He was followed by John C. Freitag. The 1910 bank building served the community until 1959 when the present structure (also on Main Street) designed by Steinmann architects, was built. |
