Additional Information: | A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. New Glarus' first brick school building, constructed by Jacob Steinman in 1896, is a gable roofed two story structure with Queen Anne detailing, including a shingled tower and gable, and a massive chimney. A.D. Conover, Madison architect, connected the 1914 addition to the earlier structure and continued the style. The addition, a two-story classroom and gymnasium, on the west side (1939)is an example of Collegiate Gothic architecture. As the population of New Glarus grew in the late nineteenth century, the first portion of this building was erected on a prominent site within the village. Later expansion resulted in the additions of 1914 and 1939. 2006- " This two-story, gable roofed building the first brick school building for New Glarus. Jacob Steinman constructed the first portion of the school in 1896. The Queen Anne detailing includes a shingled tower and gable as well as a massive chimney. An addition in the same style occurred in 1914. In 1939 a two-story classroom and gymnasium was added to the west side of the building. In October 1996, the Stone House Development converted the complex into 24 apartments. In 1998 the site was added to the National Register of Historic Places." -"Historic Landmarks of New Glarus", Historical Preservation Commission of New Glarus, prepared by Amanda Crary, 2006. |
