Additional Information: | Description: Casa del Sueno is a carefully preserved Spanish Colonial Revival house which was built around 1929. The 16 room, stucco villa with ceramic tile hipped roof is beautifully sited amid a wide lawn high above Geneva Lake. The U-planned house includes a recessed main block with a first story exterior courtyard and an open, full-width second story roofed porch with a wrought iron balcony. Greaceful, open balanced stairways lead from the courtyard to the front lawn. Arched and paired windows include wrought iron grilles. The estate includes a lakeside guesthouse/pavilion (WL 24/28) built in the shape of a boat, with appropriate detail. Architectural/Engineering Significance: Casa del Sueno's integrity of site, architecture and materials determine it a significant structure. The scale, quality and design of the Spanish Colonial villa are impressive. Historical Background: Casa del Sueno was built on the site of the former Galewood, an estate that burned in 1928. The owner, Mrs. Jessie Bartlett Hooper had a classic, Mediterranean-style villa built, but only lived in it five years. The next owner was Mildred Ruehl Starck, who owned the house from 1935 to 1952. The present owners are Philip and Lee Bell, television producers and writers. |
