Additional Information: | The Schmidt House is a four-bedroom, two-and-a-half story, single-family home, and serves as a well preserved example of an Arts & Crafts Style American Foursquare. The house faces east, sitting on property elevated above street level, giving the house a sense of grandeur. Stucco and wood clapboard exterior. Field-stone foundation. Low-pitched, hipped-roof with deep, overhanging eaves, two dormers, and two pairs of windows on the upper-level facade. Lower-level facade prominently displays a full-length front porch, original oak door, and three-window bay. Matching three-window hanging-bay for south facing dining room. Leaded and stained-glass windows throughout lower-level. North facing hanging-bay, for upper-level staircase windows, sits above a secondary entrance. The west side, or back of the house, has an upper-level deck sitting above an original, two-room addition. The two-room addition functioned as the Optometry Clinic of Conrad Schmidt from 1917-1953. A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, Division of Historic Preservation-Public History. 2016 UPDATE - HOUSE LOOKS MUCH LIKE IT DID WHEN SURVEYED LAST IN 1996. |
